Dinner with the Kyungus
We are getting so close to our trip and the chance to see some of our kids! We are so excited. We can do it! Focus, focus...
This week was pretty standard as we continue preparing to see our kids. Did I mention we’re about to see them already? 🤩
First, Doug’s medical updates were uneventful, which is great news for the missionaries, though probably not the most thrilling for you to read about. The reports for the week included cases of malaria, HIV, rectal bleeding, and a bike accident. Thankfully, the missionary involved in the bike accident was wearing a helmet when he was struck. Despite the helmet, he sustained a concussion, but it could have been much worse had he not been obedient in wearing it. We've gained an even stronger testimony of the importance of obedience here in Africa. So many missionaries have been protected or stayed healthy by faithfully following mission health and safety rules!
Lori’s week was filled with her usual Monday at the Distribution Center and Wednesday at the MTC. Additionally, I started working at the temple on Tuesday afternoons. I love working on Tuesdays! This is when many of the MTC missionaries receive their endowment for the first time. Fun fact: the Ghana temple holds the record for the most own endowments performed in a single day. Last Tuesday, there were 96 own endowments! None of these missionaries had an escort, so it took a lot of workers to help them get ready and where they needed to be. I love being a part of this great work!
Another highlight of the week was being invited to the Kyungu’s home for dinner. Elder Kyungu is the Area President for the Africa West Area, and he is a wonderful man. Sister Kyungu made a beautiful and delicious meal—she is so gracious! They have a 17-year-old daughter, Bernice, who is an absolute sweetheart. She plays soccer on a winning team, wants to attend BYU, and is a very impressive young woman. The Duquettes, the MTC mission president and his wife, were also invited. The food was extraordinary, and the spirit was so wonderful. If I closed my eyes, I could almost feel like I was back home. Their hospitality was incredible, and the company was the best. Thank you, Kyungu family, for such a memorable and delicious evening. ❤️
After dinner at the Kyungus', we hurried home to grab our luggage before our good friends picked us up to head to the airport. We were giddy with excitement for our 10:30 PM flight, but we tried to settle down so we could get a little rest before our arrival in Kenya!
We pray you’re all having a wonderful holiday season! We encourage you to remember the reason for the season. As you spend time with family and friends, openly express your gratitude for our Savior, Jesus Christ. His birth in Bethlehem, His life, and His infinite Atonement are the true reason we celebrate. Through Him, we can have eternal life and exaltation with our families. This is truly the best gift we could ever hope for. Extra love to you all during this special time of year!
Much love,
Elder and Sister Baker
